Ingredients for Vegan apple pie crust

To Make the vegan apple pie crust recipe you'll need these ingredients:

  • Ice cold water

  • Coconut Oil [solid cold]
  • Coconut Sugar
  • Salt

Ingredients for Vegan apple pie filling

To make the vegan apple pie filling you'll need:

  • Apples
  • Coconut sugar
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Cornstarch

How to Make Vegan Pie Crust

  • Step 1: Combine ingredients in a food processor

Combine coconut flour, cold coconut oil, coconut sugar, and salt in a food processor with "S" blade. Pulse a few times until it looks like a "coarse meal".

  • Step 2: Add Ice cold water and process

Add 3-4 tablespoons of ice-cold water with the food processor running. Stop once it begins to clump together. You might want to add another tablespoon of water to bring it all together.

  • Step 3: Shape the dough

Place the dough on a lightly floured kitchen surface. Use your hands to shape the dough in the form of a ball.

  • Step 4: Roll the dough and transfer to pie plate

Use a rolling pin to roll the dough to about 12-inch diameter. Wrap the dough around your rolling pin and unroll it into a pie plate.

Flute the edges and use your fingers to tuck the pie crust all around the pie dish. If there is any excess dough around the edges, you can trim it off.

You can use the pie crust immediately or refrigerate until it's ready. In this recipe, we'll need two pie crusts (one for the top and one for the bottom). In that case, you can double this recipe.

You can use this Vegan Pie crust for tarts like - Homemade High Protein Pop Tarts, or Asparagus Tart with Puff Pastry or Galletes like - Cherry Almond Galette or Tartlets recipes like - Strawberry Lemon Tartlets and Mini Apple Tarts - Mini Condensed Milk Apple Tarts

Dump the apple pie filling into the Vegan Pie Crust.

  • Step 2: Roll the second crust

Roll out the second crust and cut it into thin 1-inch strips using a sharp knife. Place the thin strips over the apple pie filling, making a criss-cross pattern over the pie.

  • Step 3: Brush with Milk and Bake

In a small bowl, combine dairy-free vegan milk (of your choice) with a pinch of turmeric powder. Whisk lightly and brush it over the top of the criss-cross pie crust. Sprinkle some coconut sugar and ground cinnamon over the pie crust.

  • Step 4: Bake

Transfer the Vegan Apple Pie to a preheated oven at 350 degrees F and bake for 45-50 minutes or until the top of the pie turns light golden brown.

  • Step 5: Allow the Pie to cool down

Remove from the oven and allow the pie to cool down at room temperature for 30-45 minutes.

  • Step 6: Cut into slices and enjoy with coconut cream or Vegan Ice Cream

Cut into equal slices using a sharp knife. Use an offset spatula to get it out. Serve with a generous dollop of coconut cream or any Vegan Ice cream you love.

And that's how you make the Best Vegan Apple Pie. 🥧

My Pie dough feels too sticky?

If your pie dough feels too sticky, then place it on a lightly floured surface. Dust your hands with flour. Add more flour into the dough. And bring it together gently without overworking the dough.

My Pie dough feels too dry and crumbly?

Dip your fingers in ice cold water and get the dough together with your hands. Form it into a ball.

Do try Vegan Chocolate Pudding with Coconut milk

Why didn't I use Vegan Butter?

The thing is I'm allergic to Vegan Butter therefore I've use coconut oil [solid] in stead of Vegan Butter.

When I was beginning with the recipe I was quite apprehensive about the fact, that the dough might turn out sticky.

But, when the dough turns sticky, it simply means that you gotta add more flour.

Have you tried: Vegan Sweet Potato Casserole

Why did my Pie crust shrink when I baked?

Your Pie crust will shrink when you don't chill your fresh pie crust for at least 45-minutes in the refrigerator.

To avoid this, always ensure that you refrigerate your pie crust for at least 45-minutes before baking.

Can I use Store bought Pie crust?

You can use storebought pie crust but it won't taste as good. If you want to use store bought pie crust ensure the ingredients are vegan-friendly.

What Kind of Apples do I suggest?

I would go with gala apples, hands down. But, when I want it to be lightly tarty, I like to combine 3 green granny smith apples with 6 gala apples.

How to Store and Reheat Apple Pie?

Refrigerator: Store your Vegan Apple Pie in the refrigerator after covering it lightly with a plastic wrap. It'll stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.

You can keep it covered at room temperature for 24-hours and it'll be fresh. But it also depends on where you are staying and your climate.

Freezer: To freeze leftover Apple Pie, I suggest cutting them into individual slices and wrapping each one of them in a plastic wrap. To prevent them from freezer burns, double wrap with aluminum foil.

You can store the Apple Pie slices in a tightly covered freezer-safe box for up to 3-months.

Reheat: Allow the Apple Pie to thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Microwave for 7-10 minutes or until it's ready to eat.

Make the Pie crust

  • Add all the ingredients (for pie crust)except water to a food processor with an "S" handle. Pulse a few times until it forms a "coarse meal"
  • With the food processor running, pour ice-cold water 6-7 tablespoons. You might need another tablespoon of water to bring it all together.
  • Transfer the pie dough to a lightly floured kitchen surface. Use your hands to bring it together and shape it in the form of a ball.
  • If the dough is too sticky, flour your hands and your rolling pin and add some more flour into the dough and bring it all together without overworking the dough.
  • If the dough is too dry and crumbly dip your fingers in Ice cold water and add another 1-2 tablespoons of ice cold water. Bring it all together and shape it in the form of a ball.
  • Divide the dough into two parts. Use a sharp knife to cut it into two halves.
  • Lightly flour the rolling pin and start rolling from the center, pressing to the sides. Rotate the dough after each roll to ensure a smooth roll. Roll out the dough until it's about 12 inches in diameter.
  • Wrap the dough over the rolling pin and gently transfer the pie crust into the pie dish.
  • Flute the edges and use your fingers to tuck the pie crust all around the pie dish. If there is any excess dough around the edges, you can trim it off.

Place it on a lightly floured kitchen surface.
  • Roll out the second crust and cut it into thin 1-inch strips using a sharp knife.
  • Place the thin strips over the apple pie filling, making a criss-cross pattern over the pie.
  • In a small cup, combine vegan milk with ground turmeric. Stir well.
  • Use a brush to brush the milk over the pie crust.
  • Generously sprinkle some ground cinnamon and coconut sugar over the pie crust before it goes into the oven.

Bake

  • Bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees F for at least 45-50 minutes or until the top turns golden brown.
